The Vice-Chancellor of Kola Daisi University, Ibadan, Prof Luke Ayorinde, has urged the Federal Government to retain its seasoned professionals in line with developmental goals.
Ayorinde during a briefing on the unveiling of seven newly approved courses by the National Universities Commission said there was a need for the Federal Government to prioritise the welfare and infrastructural development in the land.
He said, “Reasons, why people emigrate, are not far-fetched. If things are working well in the country; if the condition of service, salaries and remuneration are adequate, nobody would want to go and become the second citizen in another man’s country.
“If, when you graduate, to get a job becomes a challenge there is that tendency that you will want to go outside the country. When you get a job in Nigeria but the condition is not okay, you tend to look outside.”
Ayorinde described a situation where Nigeria has a ratio of one medical doctor to 30,000 persons as lamentable and dicey, saying, “Though we don’t have enough medical doctors here in Nigeria, many people still go outside. Why are they going?
“Taking a look at Canada and the United States of America, the priority given to professionals is not in Nigeria. The facilities that are supposed to be there to make you feel happy are not there. Most of our clinics are like consulting centres but I can see that gradually, things are getting better. At least, the federal medical centres are now coming up.”
“Government must make sure that the good hands are retained to stop the brain drain. God helping us, when we eventually start medical school, Kola Daisi University will ensure that ours is one of the best in Nigeria. We have been linking with some of the best universities in the world to see how we can learn from them and replicate what they do.
“Now that NUC has approved the courses is time to let the public know about the quality that we can offer,” he said.
The vice-chancellor listed the newly approved courses for the university by NUC as cybersecurity, law, information technology, software engineering, information and media science, international relations and marketing.
