Bandits kill police inspector in Niger

Bandits have attacked Bangi community, in the Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, killing an inspector identified as Ibrahim Mitra.

It was learnt that a distress call was put across to a joint police and military team that some bandits, suspected to be cattle rustlers, stormed Muchiya Kaji village in Mariga and were about to make away with the cows.

The team reportedly mobilised to the scene and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, killing three bandits and forcing others to abandon the cattle and flee into the bush.

Northern City News gathered that it was during the encounter that Mitra was killed, while two other policemen sustained gun injuries.

Our correspondent further gathered that the deceased inspector was among the team that engaged bandits and cattle rustlers on February 14, 2020, when the assailants invaded Dankolo village in the same Mariga council.

The team had recovered 13 cows and killed three bandits.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, on Tuesday confirmed the incident, adding that the two other officers wounded were receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state.

Abubakar said, “The Niger State Police Command and the Force as a whole deeply regret the demise of the gallant inspector who paid the supreme price while fighting banditry in the state.

“The police command joins his friends and loved ones in commiserating with his family over his demise. We pray that God Almighty grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

The spokesman noted that the joint team recovered from the bandits one AK-47 rifle and one Bajaj motorcycle, adding that the police were on the trail of the bandits.
