Police probe senatorial candidate’s killing, NSCDC arrests official


The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Olaniyi Fafowora, has ordered a full scale investigation into the killing of the 2019 senatorial candidate of the Action Alliance in Imo North, Ndubuisi Emenike.



The politician popularly known as Ototonwa was shot dead by an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps during a victory party for the All Progressives Congress in Okigwe North Federal constituency on Saturday.



The APC candidate, Mirriam Onuoha, was returned elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission, defeating the incumbent, Obinna Onwubuariri of the Peoples Democratic Party.



The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, who spoke to journalists in Owerri on Monday, said the NSCDC officer had been arrested and transferred to the command headquarters in Owerri.



Ikeokwu said contrary to the news that the NSCDC officer who killed the politician was attached to the victim, the operative was attached to another person who accompanied the deceased to the venue.



Ikeokwu said, “The CP has ordered a full scale investigation into the killing of the 2019 senatorial candidate of Action Alliance in Imo North, Ndubuisi Emenike, popularly known as Ototonwa.



 “The NSCDC officer who fired the shot is in our custody.”



Earlier, the Commandant-General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Muhammadu Gana, condemned the NSCDC personnel.



He said, “The suspect had been arrested and handed over to the police.”
