Troops defuse bombs, rescue 51 Boko Haram captives

Troops of the Nigerian Army attached to Operation Lafiya Dole have rescued at least 51 persons captured by the Boko Haram terrorists in the Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State.

The troops also discovered and defused two Improvised Explosive Devices planted by the insurgents in the Buni Gari area in the Gujba LGA of Yobe State.

According to the military, the 51 abductees were located by the troops on Tuesday after a gun battle with the insurgents during which two of the fighters were killed.

The army said in a statement on Wednesday that a gun truck, two AK-47 rifles and one anti-aircraft gun were recovered.

The military noted that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, had ordered troops to ensure a peaceful atmosphere nationwide for citizens and residents as this year’s ember months roll in.

The army’s Operations Media Coordinator, Col Aminu Iliyasu, added, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that one of the suspects and a non-governmental organisation operating in the North-East had been communicating at various times.”
