Customs distribute seized rice, others to orphanages


The Nigeria Customs Service has said that it distributed about 32,576 bags of 50kg rice; 1,790 kegs of 25 litre vegetable oil; 32,329 bales of used clothes; 47 bags of 50kg sugar and about 2,675 pairs of shoes to registered orphanages in the six South-West states.



The Chairman of the Sub-committee on the Distribution of Relief Items to Orphanages, Comptroller Yakubu Saliu, disclosed this to journalists in Abeokuta on Sunday.



Saliu said no fewer than 7,358 orphans in the 134 orphanages across the South-West had benefited from the ongoing distribution of relief materials by the NCS.



He said the committee was inaugurated by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Ahmed Ali (retd.) to cater for the welfare of orphans and Internally Displaced Persons across the country.



He added that the sub-committee’s activities covered orphanages in Zone ‘A’ covering Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo and Ogun states.



Saliu stated, “Here in the South-West, we don’t have displaced persons or IDPs, so, we concentrated on the orphanages. Immediately after the inauguration of the committee by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Ahmed Ali (retd.), we swung into action, identifying and verifying all the IDPs and orphanages in all states and the Federal Capital Territory.



“The sub-committee, under my leadership, began this important assignment in zone A of the Nigerian Customs Service in Lagos on Tuesday, 12 Feb, 2019.



 “Three weeks into the exercise, we are happy to announce that a great impact has been made in the lives of orphans in the zone, in line with the Federal government intention to alleviate the sufferings of the less privileged in the country.



 “So far, we have distributed 32,576 bags of 50kg rice, 1,790 kgs of 25litres of oil, bales of used clothes 32,329 bales and 24 bags  of   used clothes.



 “We also have sugar of 50kgs  of 47bags. We have  2,675 pairs of used shoes that have been distributed. In addition to 98 cartons of tomato paste, we have 13 cartons of  detergent and soap.



 “These relief items were distributed to a total number of 134 orphanage homes with a cumulative number of 7,350 orphans in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti states.”
