The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari defeated his Peoples Democratic Party opponent, Atiku Abubakar at the Benue State Government House polling unit, Makurdi.
Buhari polled 125 to narrowly defeat Abubakar who scored 124. The state governor, Mr Samuel Ortom, is currently a member of the PDP having defected from the APC.
Buhari also defeated Atiku at polling unit 011, Ndabagi, Bank North, where the state APC governorship candidate, Mr Emmanuel Jime voted. Buhari polled 166 votes to defeat Atiku who got 17 votes at the centre.
He also won Atiku at Wanune Township voting unit 009 where a former state governor, Senator George Akume voted. Buhari polled 304 while Atiku got 102. Akume who is also the APC senatorial candidate polled 324 while his PDP opponent got 88 votes.
There was a large turnout of voters in the state and the elections were peaceful as of the time of filing this report.
Despite some hitches, prominent politicians commended the voters for their enthusiasm and peaceful conduct.
There were also cases of faulty card readers, late commencement of accreditation including arrest of suspected electoral offenders.
Akume, who voted at Nwanune Township polling unit 009 at 9.15am, alleged that there was ballot box snatching by agents of Ortom.
Also, Ortom who voted at 9.52am at Ako polling unit, expressed concern over the arrest of a PDP agent, Dr Cletus Tyoka. He accused the Federal Government of trying to use the arrest to divert attention and manipulate the elections.
At polling unit 011, Ndabagi, Bank North, Makurdi, where Jime voted at 11.05am, the card reader malfunctioned, prompting him to decry the situation.
