The police on Sunday paraded 33 suspected Indigenous People of Biafra members who allegedly killed a police Inspector and wounded others when they clashed with the police in Nnewi on Friday.
The suspects allegedly seized the slain officer’s rifle along with other guns which they snatched from other officers when the police attempted to stop their protest march.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, who paraded the suspects at the state police headquarters, Amawbia, Anambra State, said the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had directed the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar, to carry out “intense operations” towards the recovery of the two AK47 rifles and one Beretta pistol that were allegedly snatched from the policemen during the clash.
Jimoh said the suspects would be arraigned in court after the completion of investigations under the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act 2013.
He added,”The Force is hereby informing the public that the Indigenous People of Biafra is a proscribed terrorist group and all activities of the group are therefore unlawful, illegal and terrorist act.”
However, most of the suspects denied being part of the protest.
One of them, Sunday Ilonze, said, “I came out from the church and suddenly saw some soldiers who arrested me.
“They were shooting and traders started running away but I refused to join them because I’m innocent and also a law-abiding citizen.”
Another suspect, Vincent Okafor, said he was beaten by some policemen before he was arrested.
He said, “Those who arrested me for what I didn’t do should remember that there is God who will judge everyone.”
