A fight between two men over a lady at a birthday party in Lushi Ward in Bauchi reportedly sparked a clash between some Muslim and Christian youths, leading to the loss of lives and the burning of houses.
Spokesman for the police in the state, Kamal Abubakar, on Monday confirmed that three persons were killed, with eight others injured and two houses burnt during the crisis.
He added that 75 suspects had been arrested by the police.
In a statewide broadcast, Governor Abdullahi Abubakar said the curfew was necessary to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
He named the areas affected by the the curfew as Yelwa Tsakani, Ungwan Kusu, Ungwan Ngas, Lushi and Yelwa Kagadama.
The governor said, “A sad development on Sunday occurred, following a misunderstanding between some youths around Yelwa Tsakani and Lushi communities during a birthday party.
“This degenerated into a communal crisis leading to the loss of three lives and destruction of two houses at Yelwa Tsakani settlement.”
He lamented the incident came at a time when the Federal Government was taking steps to restore peace to some parts of the country ravages by communal conflicts
The governor said, “As you all know, Bauchi State is known for its peaceful coexistence and law-abiding disposition. We must therefore not allow disgruntled elements who may want to sow seeds of discord among us.
“I personally inspected the area yesterday (Monday) and saw things for myself. I had to appeal to the warring communities for calm.”
