The Federal Government on Monday said it had completed plans
to harmonise road signage and markings in all states across the country and
that this would become visible by next month.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of
Power, Works and Housing, Mohammed Bukar, all states will be encouraged to
adopt the new strategy in the reviewed highway design manual so as to enhance
the value of road infrastructure in Nigeria.
He spoke at the National Council on Works’ meeting in Abuja.
Bukar, who was represented by the Director of Highway,
Planning and Development, Chukwunike Uzo, said the ministry would commence the
rollout of signage within the stretches of completed federal roads by next
month.
He said the Federal Government had issued the directive and
that the decision became imperative in order to assist road users, especially
visitors, in line with international best practices.
Bukar stated, “It is so sad that we have overlooked road
signage. All along, our focus has been on the big pictures and we forgot the little
things that could impact, change and add value to our road works.
“We want to provide this facility to our people to make our
country visitor-friendly and enhance the value of the road infrastructure.”
He noted that the meeting provided a forum for stakeholders
in the works sector to deliberate on issues concerning the industry in order to
proffer solutions to the problems of construction and maintenance of highways
in Nigeria.
